Secrets of Medicine Uncovered in Book

“The Secrets of Modern Medicine Revealed,” a book written by Dr. Nabin Sapkota of Norfolk, delves into the mystic world of medicine in order to provide insight to everyday patients.
The book’s subtitle, “How Does a Doctor Find Out What is Wrong With you? Well, Basically, You Tell Him!” illustrates Sapkota’s goal to bring doctors and patients closer together by helping patients understand what a doctor is looking for.
Not many patients know what a doctor can discover by listening with a stethoscope or why it’s essential to tell the doctor all their symptoms, Sapkota said.
After he began working three years at Faith Regional Health Services as a hospital-based physician — also known as a hospitalist — he quickly realized how little patients knew about medical practices.
For instance, patients expect to feel 100 percent better after taking medicine or sometimes insist on undergoing every available medical test to ensure they do not have any diseases.
“They don’t understand that tests do not work that way,” Sapkota said. “They have high expectations. They don’t know that a test can be negative, and you can still have that disease.”
The most important information a doctor gains is from asking the patients questions.
“Diagnosing patients is more like detective work than exact science,” Sapkota said.
Knowing the symptoms the patient has, where the pain is, where it started and when it started all play a role in finding the right treatment Sapkota wanted to explain these types of things to his patients, so he started jotting down notes.
After chatting with friends, family and other professionals, Sapkota decided to turn his notes into a book.
Instead of going to a large publishing firm, Sapkota established MedTale Publishing and self-published his book.
“All of the experience and things I talk about, I gained by working in Nebraska,” Sapkota said. “So, I want people in Nebraska to know this is something local.”
Patients can buy copies of “The Secrets of Modern Medicine Revealed” locally in the Faith Regional gift shop. Sapkota is also working with GROW Nebraska, a non-profit economic development organization, to distribute his book to other stores in Nebraska.
“The ultimate goal is for readers to understand how medicine works,” Sapkota said. “It will help them have a realistic expectation of the health care system. They won’t run after the advertisements and call their doctors about the new wonder drug. They won’t have these misconceptions.”
